At the same time that the Chianti Star Festival is coming together, the university spin-off, Terza Cultura, at the Florentine University Incubator, is also emerging. I contributed to this spin-off by thinking up the name, borrowing the term from the book by John Brockman, who by referencing the dichotomy between Charles Percy Snow’s “two cultures”, he united scientists and writers (and artists) in a ‘third culture’. Indeed, the Chianti Star Festival aims to bring together art and science, in the same way that was discussed most recently in Barcelona, on the occasion of the latest edition of the Festival of Literature, that so happened to be dedicated to the theme of the Third Culture by John Brockman.
A few
months ago in Florence during Florens,
the results of research on the Italian exhibition system and festivals of cultural
studies, were presented. As the Chianti Star Festival is one such festival, the
data presented by Guido Guerzoni immediately seemed to me to be very
interesting and indeed, encouraging. As were the testimonies of Peter Florence,
Director of the Hay Festival and Ulrich Schreiber, Director of the
International Literature Festival
Berlin.
Mentioning
these two literature festivals, I feel obliged to cite two other links. The
first because all festivals of cultural studies in Italy and elsewhere, owe so much
to the Literature Festival of Mantua. Indeed, the Chianti Star Festival
is in some way based on this model too. The second is the Festival of Science in Genoa, with which OpenLab has
already collaborated (suffice to mention the success of the lectures given in
Genoa by Professor Luigi Dei).
